Here’s my top 10 favourite England goals in World Cups.
Only goals I can remember watching, so that’s everything from 1986 onwards. I was 11 in 1986.

They are not in order of the best technical goals but in my eyes the most important ones decided by how far off the sofa I jumped when England scored.

1. David Platt v Belgium – 119 mins – Italia 90 – Quater Final

Any goal scored in the last minute of extra time in a World Cup quarter final will take some beating and this is no exception.
I seem to remember Belgium were arguably the better team on the day, Enzo Schiefo hit the post late on in normal time.

The whole country were braced for penalties when David Platt ran onto the end of a perfect Gazza free kick.

2. Gary Lineker vs West Germany – Italia 90 – Semi Final

This goal was so close to being no 1 and was by far the most important goal I’ve seen England score at a World Cup but alas it meant nothing when we lost the game on pens.

Still a quality goal from one of England’s best ever strikers and it proved he didn’t score them all inside the 6 yard area.

3. Michael Owen vs Argentina – France 1998 – Round Of 16

Brilliance from an outstanding talent. This put Owen on the road to international stardom.

4. Gary Lineker vs Poland – Mexico 1986 – Final Group Game

England had lost there opening game against Portugal and drawn their second so were desperate for a win to stay in the tournament.
Gary Lineker was the man 3 times that night.

5. Gary Lineker vs Argentina – Mexico 1986 – Quarter Final

We’d had the hand of god and then that amazing goal from Maradona. This goal would get us back in the game and back in the world cup.
Lineker would miss an easier chance late on to equalise but I remember this goal had me dancing round the house.

6. Paul Scholes England vs Tunisia – France 1998 – Group Game

This goal was simply superb from one of England’s best ever players in my opinion.

7. Darren Anderton vs Colombia – France 1998 – Group Game

A massive final game in the group and Anderton always took stick from some England fans although he always played well in the shirt.

Quality strike.

8. David Beckham vs Argentina – Japan 2002 – Group Game

Redemption from Becks after the sending off in 1998, but more importantly the goal that won us the game.

9. Mark Wright vs Egypt – Italia 1990 – Final Group Game

Mark Wright saved England’s blushes in a group where every game had been a draw, and if this had too the group would be decided by flipping a coin.

Luckily the header won us the group.

10. Steven Gerrard vs Trinidad And Tobago – Germany 2006 – Group Game

England needed this after a scrappy game. Not for the first time Gerrard came to the rescue.

11. Joe Cole vs Sweden – Germany 2006 – Group Game

This goal just missed out as it didn’t mean as much as the others above. A great strike from Joe in a game where both teams had already qualified from the group.

A notable mention.

Nothing to play for in the 3rd/4th place game against Italy in Italia 90 but I do remember David Platt’s bullet header.

I’ve got to add these two.

If this shot by Lampard had stood then nobody knows what could have happened. I know, people will say England would have lost 4-2 not 4-1 but nobody knows.

This goal was much more controversial. Down to 10 men and holding on, when Sol headed this home we all thought this was our best chance to win a world cup.

Alas it was not to be though.

Just some of my own world cup memories. As I say maybe not the best goals by England in the World Cup but ones I certainly remember celebrating the most.

What do you think? Did I miss any obvious ones?

Let me know your own memories of great England or any other teams goals.

Here’s hoping that England can score a few more in Brazil 2014.
